October 2011The pumpkins and gargoyles are out for October festivities in Salem and Boston Massachusetts
Salem, a sea coast town in Massachusetts, on the East coast of the USA, famous for its 1692 witch trials, celebrates Halloween from October 1st to 31st, 2011. Every year for Halloween, Salem becomes the must-be place in America. This year, Salem celebrates the 30th anniversary of its Haunted Happenings festival, where more than 80 events for children and adults will take place all month long. The Great Parade on October 6th will mark the beginning of the festivities in Salem. It starts at 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm. Thousands of people from all ages gather in the streets of Salem dressed in costume, and listen to live music.
The Witches Cottage is organizing special activities for Halloween. Children can learn magic tricks alongside a wizard, visitors who want to learn more about the Witch Trials and live the fear that the people of Salem experienced can watch re-enactments. Visitors will also be able to board a trolley for a tour of Salem, during which spooky stories will be told along with the story of Salem. For more information: witchescottagesalem.com
Free movie screenings are organises on the Salem Common: Monsters Inc. on October 8th, Casper on October 15th, Hocus Pocus on October 22nd and Beatlejuice on October 29th. “The Spirits of the Gables” is a re-enactment of the events featured in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book “The House of the Seven Gables,” in which the story takes place. The show plays continuously every 35 min from October 7th to 31st from 7.30 pm to 11.00 pm. For more information: 7gables.org
Trick or Treat” at the Pioneer Village happens on October 31st, in Salem. The village re-enacts a town center similar to what the 1st pilgrims coming from Europe to America experienced in 1630. Children will be able to knock on every door to Trick or Treat from 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm. For more information: pioneervillagesalem.com

Halloween is celebrated all across the state of Massachusetts, and in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighbourhood, the spooky festivities are enjoyed by huge crowds each year. The cobblestone streets come alive with children in elaborate costumes as they run to all the historic brownstone houses to get candy and treats.
